Suellen is a licensed mental health counselor in Orlando whose practice focuses on counseling adults and teens as individuals, as well as in couples and families, with special emphasis on helping individuals in recovery from substance abuse, depression, anxiety, stress, grief and loss. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Music and her Master’s Degree in Counseling from Rollins College. She has a broad range of experience working as a therapist in private practice, on a college campus, in a Drug Court program and in an outpatient behavioral health program in Orlando.

Suellen’s primary focus is on the individual because she believes that healthy individuals engage in more active self-care and function better in families, relationships, work environments and all other aspects of life. Suellen has also been a family law attorney, mediator and parent coordinator and has a strong background in family counseling services which have been helpful in opening up lines of communication and re-establishing structure and healthy boundaries for hundreds of clients in recovery from substance abuse and their family members. In addition to providing alcohol and drug counseling in Orlando, Suellen has worked with many clients in unhealthy relationships due to substance abuse and alcoholism codependency. Codependency occurs when a person in relationship with someone suffering from substance abuse or another addictive or unhealthy behavior becomes preoccupied with that individual to the point of neglecting self. Having regained a healthy perspective on the partner and the problem behavior through counseling, the person with codependency is able to let go of what can’t be changed about the other person, refocus on self and begin to enjoy a higher level of life satisfaction.

When working with clients with depression, anxiety and other mental health issues, Suellen utilizes a wide variety of techniques from cognitive behavior therapy, logotherapy, mind-body integration approaches and energy medicine, tailoring her approach to fit each client’s individual learning style and comfort level. Suellen also offers life management coaching and has substantial experience teaching life skills to adults and teens. Effective stress management is a primary component of life management and is necessary for dealing with the accumulation of too much pressure from the constant demands posed on us by family life, relationships, and work situations. A particular form of stress in which Suellen has expertise is the stress of involvement in the legal system. With a law degree from the Florida State University College of Law and over 24 years of experience as an attorney in the Orlando area, Suellen knows first-hand the pressures of involvement in court proceedings and can help provide perspective and effective techniques for handling this type of difficulty.

A professional musician and music manager for 25 years in the Orlando area with a Master’s Degree from the Ohio State University School of Music, Suellen uses creative and experiential techniques in working with performing and fine artists as a creativity coach to help counteract procrastination, self-doubt, performance anxiety and other issues that are frequent obstacles to creative expression.

Suellen appreciates the preferences, values and customs that clients from diverse cultures bring to the counseling relationship. She offers services to members of all religions, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds and has 20 years of experience working with members of the lesbian, gay, transgendered and bisexual community, particularly on issues related to divorce, parenting, gender identity and gender dysphoria. Her advanced Diversity Facilitation Training work (through the Florida Bar) has enabled her to offer diversity and multiculturalism sensitivity trainings for groups and organizations in the Orlando area. Suellen honors all religious and spiritual traditions and is comfortable discussing and offering help to those in spiritual crises involving loss of meaning in life and the need for values re-clarification.

With her personal experience as someone successfully managing a physical disability and using a wheelchair for mobility, Suellen is in a unique position to attend to the needs, challenges and concerns of persons with disabilities or chronic health conditions, as well as individuals experiencing caregiver stress. She offers stress management training for those facing or recovering from surgical procedures and their caregivers. Having been trained in Reiki, or Healing Touch, she demonstrates this approach to interested clients who use this highly effective method to redirect their bodily energies and promote healing. She is happy to share her personal experiences to help others as a motivational speaker for groups and organizations in the Orlando area.
